There was a documented performance of Bach's St. Mark's Passion being performed on Good Friday in 1731. Much of this piece of music was lost. However, musicologist Andor Gomme reconstructed the music, making it possible for the San Gabriel Chorale to perform this Central Texas premiere.
This performance had 17 pieces in the orchestra, including replicas of musical instruments used in the early 1700's.
The Viola da Gambas, similar to today's viola, and the Oboe d'amores, similar to today's flute. They offer unique sound, as well as challenges to the musicians.
